The Beginning of the end for Alpha Luna

Back at the end of 2014 I started a dream, that I could create a comic that could reach people in love with werewolves as much as I loved them, as amazing creatures that could be more than horror icons but fierce heroes too. The story of a girl named Luna in a story of self discovery. It’s been almost 15 years and after many and a few road bumps and hiatuses along the way I’m still working on it as much as I can.
But the time has come to look forward to her farewell. But before you send flying your table out of the window or towards me, let me tell you Alpha Luna is not ending today but soon, as we reach chapter’s 5 ending. Which means, about two months of drawing works from today. Time which will add at least 8 pages or more depending on the layouts I’m working atm. That means pages will still be posted more regularly from now on and the Alpha Luna Chronicles being posted at my Patreon will still happen, in fact they may last longer than Alpha Luna main story line.
So then, Why is Alpha Luna ending? Well to start, it’s been a long time. Through the years It was always an uphill road as I never took AL to another level of production, it was and it always been a solo endeavor and many times through the years I took time out as I grew up as an artist and as a creator. But I couldn’t focus or learning other things as each AL page took me about 12 hours of continuos work to make. I did many sacrifices of my life time for it, but my art and narrative was never as good and neither consistent to reach an audience big enough to go to another level. It drained me over time and the hiatuses repeated itself over and over digging a bigger hole scaring old readers away and making my goals just a wishful thinking.
The good side of these hiatuses is that I managed to recover energies and gain inspiration for what was to come, write down the script, get new ideas and get excited for the future but at the same time my slow pace drained the patience of most readers away, and I can’t keep doing that.
And that passion I had at the beginning is not with me anymore, I feel like Bilbo after the ring has passed to Frodo, and I can’t keep forcing to draw what is not there. Yes, I'm older, the back pain are there and I get easily sleepy now. I loved the characters, I loved that they connected with so many readers like you who loved Luna, Collie and Fang. I loved the response and I loved the community that we created over time.
But this is an anticipated farewell. I took this month out to think all these things, to rewrite a bit of the last pages of AL which won’t and can’t bring a closed ending to the story. A few things will inevitably just end up hanging, like a series that was cancelled before another season.
But at least some sense of closing will be there, a sense of achievement that I hope to convey through the last pages where Luna will be happy for who she is now and what may lie in the horizon on a full moon.
But remember I’m NOT leaving right now, I have at least 2 months of Alpha Luna works still to do. I’ll be publishing in my country (Chile) the 3rd and last book (next June) that will “end” the series and that means a new cover work to make.
So I hope you still stay around for the months to come. The new AL Chronicles comics at the store and Patreon are amazing and I can’t be more happy of what the artists have made. I’m uploading 4 new pages of those each month to Patreon.
My work with AL will end, but I’ll keep drawing for my own from time to time and taking commissions here and there. But this a chapter in my life that was due to happen sooner or later and I think I can be glad that at least I’m doing it in my own terms.
Thanks to all of you who loved my work and followed me through the years. Thanks to you who did those amazing art-gift you send, even if I didn’t reply all your emails, thanks from the bottom of my hearth, you made my life a bit happier.
All of this has has been an incredible journey for me and while I feel a sense of sorrow due this announcement I also feel grateful for the experience I gained working on it. I won’t say good bye just yet, the last howl is on the horizon but for now I look forward to it with a content spirit.

A finales de 2014 comencé un sueño, que podía crear un cómic que pudiera alcanzar a las personas fascinadas con los hombres lobo tanto como yo. y verlas como criaturas asombrosas que podrían ser más que íconos de terror pero también héroes feroces. La historia de una chica llamada Luna en una historia de auto-descubrimiento. Han pasado casi 15 años y después de algunos baches y tropiezos en el camino, sigo trabajando en ello tanto como puedo.
Pero ha llegado el momento de comenzar a despedirse de Luna, Collie y Fang. Pero antes que tires tu mesa fuera de la ventana o encima mío, déjame decirte que Alpha Luna no termina hoy ni mañana, pero si pronto, cuando alcancemos el final del capítulo 5.
Lo que significa, unos dos meses de trabajos de dibujo a partir de hoy. Tiempo que agregará al menos 8 páginas o más, dependiendo de los diseños de páginas en los que me encuentro trabajando ahora mismo. Eso significa que las páginas se publicarán con más frecuencia a partir de ahora y los cómics de “Alpha Luna Crónicas” que se publicarán en mi Patreon todavía serán publicados, de hecho puede que duren más que la línea principal de Alpha Luna.
Entonces, ¿por qué estoy terminando Alpha Luna?
Bueno para empezar, ha pasado mucho tiempo, quince años es mucho tiempo para una obra que ni si quiera es profesional. A través de los años Siempre fue un camino cuesta arriba, ya que nunca llevé a AL a otro nivel de producción, fué y siempre ha sido un esfuerzo en solitario y muchas veces a lo largo de los años me tomé un tiempo mientras crecía como artista y como creador .
Pero no pude concentrarme o aprender otras cosas, ya que cada página de AL me toma cerca de 12 horas de trabajo continuo para crear. Hice muchos sacrificios de mi vida para ella, pero mi arte y narrativa nunca fueron tan buenos ni consistentes para llegar a una audiencia lo suficientemente grande como para ir a otro nivel. Con el tiempo me fuí debilitando ( y obviamente me hice viejo) y las pausas se repetían una y otra vez cavando un agujero más grande que asustaba a los viejos y nuevos lectores convirtiendo mis metas en una ilusión.
El lado bueno de éstas pausas es que logré recuperar energías y obtener inspiración para lo que vendría, escribir el guión, obtener nuevas ideas y emocionarme para el futuro, pero al mismo tiempo mi ritmo lento agotó la paciencia de la mayoría de los lectores alejándolos. Y no puedo seguir haciendo eso. Simplemente mis habilidades ,compromisos y vida real me impiden lograr tal nivel de producción.
Y además esa pasión que tenía al principio de dibujar sin descanso ya no está conmigo, me siento como Bilbo después de que el anillo ha pasado a Frodo, y no puedo seguir forzando a dibujar lo que no está allí. Amé a los personajes, adoré que conectaran con tantos lectores como tú que amaban a Luna, Collie y Fang. Me encantó la respuesta y la comunidad que creamos a lo largo del tiempo. Pero esta es una despedida anticipada.
Aproveché este mes para pensar todas estas cosas, para volver a escribir un poco de las últimas páginas de AL que lamentablemente no pueden pueden traer un final completamente cerrado a la historia. Algunas cosas simplemente terminarán colgando, como una serie que fue cancelada antes de otra temporada. Sin embargo espero que al menos haya una sensación de cierre, una sensación de logro que espero transmitir a través de las últimas páginas donde Luna estará feliz por quién es ahora y qué puede haber más allá del horizonte bajo la luna llena.
Pero recuerda que NO me voy ahora mismo, tengo al menos 2 meses de trabajo aún por hacer en Alpha Luna. Si todo va bien estaré publicando en mi país el tercer y último libro (el próximo Junio en la Comicon Chile) que “terminará” la serie y eso significa una nueva portada por hacer.
Así que espero que aún estés cerca durante los próximos meses. Los nuevos cómics de AL Chronicles en la tienda y Patreon son increíbles y no puedo estar más contento de lo que han hecho los artistas invitados. Seguiré subiendo 4 nuevas páginas de ellas cada mes a Patreon.
Mi trabajo con AL terminará, pero seguiré dibujando por mi cuenta de vez en cuando y tomando comisiones aquí y allá. Pero este es un capítulo en mi vida que iba a ocurrir tarde o temprano y creo que puedo alegrarme de que al menos lo estoy haciendo en mis propios términos.
Gracias a todos ustedes que amaron mi trabajo y me siguieron a través de los años. Gracias a ti que hiciste el increíble regalo de enviarme tu fan-art de Luna, Fang o Collie, incluso si no respondí todos tus correos electrónicos, gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, hiciste mi vida un poco más feliz.
Todo esto ha sido un viaje increíble para mí y aunque siento una sensación de tristeza por este anuncio, también me siento agradecido por la experiencia que obtuve trabajando en ello. No diré adiós todavía, el último aullido está en el horizonte pero por ahora lo espero con un espíritu lleno.
